GRC Supper Club II: Operational Risk Management a Shakespearean Tale

19/3/2015

The second GRC Supper Club took place at The Sawn restaurante next to the Globe Theatre in central London. The view for our second event may not have been as panoramic as that from the Shard, but it was amazing and the Swan Restaurant private room was more conducive to group discussions. As you are all aware, the idea of the supper club is to bring together peers for networking and with that in mind it was wonderful to see, yet again, shared interests bloom, intersect and build across tables.

The event followed the same format as the last, with special guest speakers in between courses. Which enables great peer group discussions, we had 2 speakers arranged; a retired Sergeant Major [Medical Corps - deeply experienced in Risk Management, Crisis Management, Security, Leadership] and 2MC [skilled risk solution consultants - to discuss best practises and the keys to a successful implementation e.g. mitigation of engagement risk].

Some snippets from the evening include:
  • John Thirlwell¹s speech on the meaning of Op Risk was fantastic, although, he never managed to get rid of the Chinese version of his ORM book. He did, however, manage to sell a signed copy to Ron Miles (which Ron bought with my money lol).
  • Al and Dom also provided some great insight
  • Philip White is a hardcore marathon man having done his first in the desert. He is running in the London Marathon and if you would like to sponsor him see link - http://www.virginmoneygiving.com/PhilipWhite3320
  • Derek is able to do a great impromptu (I asked him during the starter ha-ha) overview of his success at Nat Grid, even after a few glasses of wine.
  • Breda and Deepak were in deep discussion on how connected the Op Risk community has become over the years. e.g. Jitendra and Deepak had worked at UBS in their careers.
  • Philip Martin carried on the discussions beyond dessert and into the post dinner drinks. Although, there was no late night pool at the 8 Ball club this time :)
  • Jitendra and Deepak had more will power than me and made their trains - Jit didn't make the 5am gym session though
  • Luke, Tom, and Ross kept Michaela in check (she loves wine) and had some insightful conversations on current burning platforms
  • Ian Sivyer  Has army routes and would like to add flavour to the risk discussion we had on this at the Summer Supper Club  I have you down now Ian, there is no getting out of itŠ ha-ha
  • Harpeet and Ash had some great conversations with Ron about bringing in vulnerability scanning into the Op Risk engine room -until the 4x nurofen kicked in :)
  • Nick - worked with Archer for over 10 years at BP so he knows the product and RSA very well, so enjoyed the social side of the evening :)
  • Robin - was gutted to miss the post dessert drinks, so I will make sure we have some whiskey ready to come out with dessert at the next event.

A huge thank you to John, Al, Dom and Derek for sharing their Op Risk experiences.
